We started this project in our design studio at RISD where we were given the opportunity to design for social innovation. After spending many weeks researching homelessness and the issues surrounding it in the South End of Boston, we found a neglected problem.
We found that socks are the most needed and least donated item in the homeless community. Socks are one of the only things that do not have a second life and must be brand new when donated. Without adequate socks, people face many health issues surrounding hygiene that can lead to infection.
Most people wake up everyday and get the luxury of putting on a pair of clean socks. With our Foot Soldiers out there, we want to raise awareness for this problem and allow all people to get the socks that they need.
